Pattern Flying
is an
increasingly popular sport worldwide. It's also an
extreme sport, challenging even the very
best flyers. Successful pattern flight requires
a very high level of exacting skill as well
as natural ability. F3A-FAI Pattern
flyers winning the highest awards are relatively few. Though it's world-wide in scope, serious
Pattern flying isn't practiced by the average
RC flyer.
It takes a special focus and steady
determination to become one of the best.
The same goes for the planes. Not just
any RC plane (or every aerobatic plane) is fit
to fly F3A-FAI Pattern well. Control
linkage and air surfaces must be just right.
Balance, rudder and aileron adjustments need
to be finely tuned. Weight and size
are also important factors. While a
flyer can certainly learn the basics of
pattern flying with any RC aircraft capable of
aerobatic flight, he will need a properly
designed and properly built plane to fully hone
his skill level for serious competition.
Pattern
airplane supplies are not readily
available at most hobby stores.
Local demand simply makes it unprofitable
for many stores (especially in remote areas)
to stock specialized pattern equipment and
supplies. Even online It may be difficult for
serious pattern flyers to find the right materials and products.
While there are lots of radio control planes
and products on the Internet, few online
merchants stock the supplies needed for building and/or modifying a
